港澳和大陸遊客到台灣觀光之餘，購買手信是不可或缺行程，除了鳳梨酥、太陽餅、豬肉紙這些食品之外，保養類的八仙果也愈來愈流行。不過，很多沒有吃過八仙果的朋友常鬧笑話，竟然跑去水果店採購，更因此被少數不肖商人當成肥羊宰殺。

八仙果是台灣常見的食品，但絕非水果，可以說是傳統的喉糖，由於其中的一些成分清涼，有潤喉、化痰的效果，除了可以緩解一些喉嚨痛、咳嗽痰多的症狀外，也是部分職業上需要長時間或大量使用嗓子的民眾，需要潤喉時的首選。據說連天王級的劉德華和張學友，也各有偏好的台灣店家。

八仙果是選用較大型芸香科植物香櫞、佛手、柚子，或體型較大的柑橘、葡萄柚，先將果肉挖出來烘乾，再加蜂蜜和中藥材混合填回水果內，最後烘乾或風乾而成，使用或販售時再切丁。用來製作八仙果的都是偏向清涼、化痰的藥材，除了半夏、茯苓和甘草，還加入薄荷、薄荷腦或冰片。為了增加化痰效果，通常加入陳皮。

又因為不少香港人迷信現切，部份店家以整顆陳年八仙果招徠，顧客挑好後當場切開封袋，讓港人覺得「夠新鮮」，但價錢卻是買散裝的好幾倍。最近一位香港朋友便買了半打小顆八仙果，每顆售價高達一千五百元新台幣，還拿出來向我炫耀，殊不知自己絕對是當了大肥羊。這種小型整顆的八仙果，在台北市專賣本地人海味南北貨的迪化街只要150元新台幣，到了遊客區卻翻了十倍。而且一問之下，還是頗有名氣的老店，我頓時對這家沒有良心的店家信心全失。會昧著良心宰殺遊客的業者，做的東西也要打上一個大問號。

我雖不愛吃八仙果，但幫親朋好友採購經驗不下百次。最有名的兩家，口感截然不同，可以比喻成花生醬，一家是有顆粒的口感，另一家吃起來很順滑，至於哪家較有效和好吃就見仁見智不予評論。不過以台灣本地人來說，幾乎都推薦迪化街的老店。會去這家店採購的人，也以商務客居多。

八仙果雖然具有止咳效果，但根據台灣的消費者文教基金會和衛福部食藥署的抽樣調查，普遍鈉含量都不低，雖未超標，但平均一天吃5顆鈉含量就1000毫克。人體一天鈉含量攝取量建議標準為2000毫克，所以吃10顆八仙果就已經到達鈉含量攝取極限，不可以為對身體有益就毫無節制服用。
